Window Material Pros & Cons
There are six materials that windows are primarily made of: vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, wood, wood-clad and composite.  Each material has its pros and cons that you should compare and consider.
1. WOOD
If you’re going for natural beauty and a traditional look, then wood is one material to choose for your windows (also see wood-clad and wood composite).  It is a popular choice among homeowners for reasons that include durability, environmentally friendly, versatility Just as there are advantages to wood window frames, there are several disadvantages to consider.
  • Pros:
    • Wood is naturally strong and gets harder over time for long-lasting performance.  You can expect a lifetime of 30+ years.
    • Wood can be stained or painted match any decor or existing colors
    • Wood does not allow as much condensation as other materials
    • Wood provides better aesthetics, which can enhance the value of a home, especially for more traditional homes.
    • Eco friendly: wood frames take less energy to create and offer greater insulation to keep homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer, as long as they're at least double-paned, but they’re not necessarily air-tight and must be certified to be eco-friendly
    • Wood provides an excellent sound barrier
  • Cons:
    • Wood frames are susceptible to rotting and warping from weather conditions
    • Vulnerable to insects and other pests, especially termites
    • They require maintenance like painting, staining, caulking, and cleaning routinely.
    • While they have a high initial cost compared to some other materials; however, they will last a lifetime with the proper care and regular maintenance.
2. VINYL
Vinyl window frames are comprised of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which is found in numerous household and plumbing products.  The durability and quality of vinyl windows have improved significantly in recent years, making them now an appropriate choice for window frames.
  • Pros:
    • Vinyl window frames are considered eco-friendly because they are quite energy efficient, if the windows are Energy Star Rated manufactured with Low-E glass.  Vinyl window frames can be efficient because they are airtight, and don’t allow air to escape when closed and locked.  They are also easy to reuse or recycle, but are not always reused or recycled as they should be.
    • Vinyl requires little to no maintenance as there’s never a need for painting or staining. Vinyl is also very easy to clean with regular household cleaners.
    • Vinyl’s UV resistant properties prevent rotting and corrosion so you can expect a lifespan of 15-20 years.
    • Vinyl is usually less expensive than other materials, like wood, composite or fiberglass.  This makes for a good return on your investment.
    • Vinyl is lightweight and therefore a easier to install
  • Cons:
    • Vinyl cannot be painted, making color options limited so you'll have a little less design flexibility, but more and more colors are being made available.
    • Darker colors may fade over time.
3. FIBERGLASS
Fiberglass windows have gained traction in our market in recent years.  Their composite of reinforced glass fibers and resin creates a strong durable material that requires little maintenance but mimics the look of wood, giving them a beautiful aesthetic.
  • Pros:
    • Fiberglass is very eco-friendly as it’s the best insulator among other materials due to its foam-filled cores, making it more energy-efficient, airtight and  sound tight.  Fiberglass frames are also completely recyclable.
    • Fiberglass is a low maintenance material that is resistant to fading, flaking, and peeling and will never need to be painted.  Moisture will not cause it to rot, mold, corrode, expand, contract, or warp. It will have a lifespan of 20-40 years and while it can withstand hot temperatures, direct blazing sunlight negatively affects its lifespan.
    • Fiberglass frames are thinner because of the strength of fiber-reinforced resins so you can have larger expanses of glass.
    • Many manufacturers offer the option of having real wood over the fiberglass for a warmer aesthetic.
  • Cons:
    • The cost of fiberglass windows is higher than every other material except wood clad.
    • There are fewer hardware and colors to choose from, making it harder to customize and match your aesthetic.
    • Because fiberglass is a rigid material, installation can be complicated and take more time than other materials.
4. ALUMINUM
Aluminum windows are be a solid choice for modern homes or window-filled additions.  They provide a streamlined, elegant look and require far less upkeep than other materials.  Since aluminum is lightweight but incredibly strong it can support large expanses of glass, so common in modern architecture.  With the aluminum advantage, your home can have large windows providing more natural light into your space.
  • Pros:
    • Aluminum is the most affordable option beating out wood and vinyl windows.
    • Aluminum is quite possibly the most eco-friendly material for windows because recycling aluminum takes just 5% of the energy required to make new aluminum.
    • Aluminum is a flexible option providing the ability to create unique shapes, colors and a customized fit due to aluminum’s easy manipulation and installation.
    • Aluminum is a durable material that is lightweight, easy to install and not susceptible to insects or rot.
    • Aluminum is available with baked-on finishes; that don’t have to ever be painted.
    • Because of its strength, aluminum offers a narrow frame allowing more glass area and better views.
  • Cons:
    • Moisture can form inside aluminum windows causing fog or moisture spots.
    • Aluminum does not hold up to heat well, making it a very poor insulator.
5. WOOD-CLAD
Wood-clad windows provide homeowners with the warm, classic appearance of wood without the tedious maintenance.  They are a hybrid of a hard exterior of aluminum or fiberglass covering a solid wood interior.  Two materials are joined to create more versatile windows.
  • Pros:
    • Variety of color and customizable options
    • Aesthetically appealing look of wood but with less maintenance
    • Wood clad is a long-lasting and durable material if maintained properly
    • Provides an excellent sound barrier
  • Cons:
    • Wood-clad is the most costly of all other window frame materials.
    • Due to the wood interior and aluminum shell, they'll require a few extra steps during installation including rubber waterproof seals and a sill pan
    • The cladding can separate over time or in rough weather
6. COMPOSITE
This type of frame is a unique makeup of wood composite (wood shavings and recycled plastic), vinyl and metal.  Composite windows give you the best qualities of several materials combined for a stronger, versatile overall product.  When this type of window first came onto the market, the composite material was just used for the windowsills, but now the entire window frame is able to be made from it, providing a superior product in performance and aesthetic appeal.
  • Pros:
    • Composite frames are very low maintenance and provide great resistance to insects, moisture, rotting, and warping through expansion and contraction
    • Aesthetic versatility: Composite frames can be made to look just like natural wood, which can then be painted or stained.
    • Eco friendly: Wood composite might be the greenest material because it is made from wood shavings and recycled vinyl, is energy-efficient, an excellent sound barrier and environmentally friendly
  • Cons:
    • The cost of wood composite is quite higher than other materials.
    • There are still a limited number of manufacturers making these types of frames making them difficult to find.
